Self-Isolation Advised for COVID-19 Positive Individuals, Says Chief Medical Officer

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ronald Georges is urging individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 to self-isolate as a precautionary measure.
While the disease is no longer considered a global health emergency and infection rates, hospitalizations, and deaths are at their lowest levels in two years, Dr. Georges emphasizes the importance of self-isolation.
Dr. Georges stated, “COVID-19 continues to be present, albeit at much lower levels than before. Exposure risk varies based on multiple factors, and most individuals who test positive for the disease experience mild symptoms.”
Factors that increase the risk of severe disease include being 50 years or older, having a weakened immune system, and underlying health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.
Individuals who are concerned or experiencing symptoms are advised to conduct a home test or visit a healthcare provider for a COVID-19 rapid test.
“Those who test positive for COVID-19 should consult their physician or general practitioner to obtain a sick leave certificate for home self-isolation,” advised Dr. Georges. He further emphasized the importance of positive individuals taking necessary precautions to protect others in their household and avoiding contact with individuals outside their household until symptoms have cleared.
Elderly individuals with chronic diseases or those residing in care homes are at a higher risk of experiencing severe symptoms or complications from COVID-19. Dr. Georges suggests that they consider wearing properly fitted masks and getting vaccinated against the disease.
COVID-19 vaccinations are available through the BVI Health Services Authority. Appointments can be made by calling the Road Town Clinic at 284-852-6566.
The community is encouraged to practice frequent handwashing and to cover coughs and sneezes properly to reduce the risk of infection and transmission.
The Ministry of Health and Social Development remains dedicated to safeguarding and promoting the health of the people of the Virgin Islands.
