UK-funded Ocean Wildlife Network Provides Underwater Cameras to BVI

The UK-funded Global Ocean Wildlife Analysis Network, a subprogramme of the Blue Belt Initiative, has delivered a significant boost to the British Virgin Islands by providing a set of cutting-edge underwater cameras known as Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems (BRUVS).

This week, officers from the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Climate Change, along with the National Parks Trust of the Virgin Islands, undertook training from the Blue Abacus team to deploy the BRUVS despite challenging sea conditions.

The data gathered from these cameras promises valuable insights into local marine ecosystems and will aid scientists in better understanding and addressing global ocean challenges.

With equipment worth approximately $75,000, including underwater GoPro cameras, trap rigs, field laptops, radio telemetry gear, handheld GPS, and specialized software, this initiative marks a significant step forward in marine conservation efforts.
