At Anegada Port facility, construction is already underway on the 40-foot container office that will house Her Majesty’s Customs, Immigration, ferry agents, and BVIPA staff. Perimeter fencing is also being installed to boost security, while other planned improvements include covered waiting areas, upgraded restrooms, and the addition of main and secondary gates to regulate dock access according to international standards.
Residents Welcome Long-Overdue Changes
For years, locals have raised concerns about the dock’s limited shelter and outdated facilities, which leave passengers exposed to sun and rain—especially during the annual Anegada Lobster Festival, when hundreds of visitors arrive at Setting Point. While the BVI Tourist Board previously installed temporary structures, residents said they were insufficient to meet the needs of both travelers and vendors. The current upgrades are seen as a much-needed improvement for comfort, safety, and convenience.
Looking Back: Promises Made in 2023
During the 2023 Lobster Festival, BVIPA Managing Director Mr. Akeem Pickering told JTV News that progress was underway at Anegada’s port facilities. “We are doing a lot of great things. It’s coming, it’s coming, it’s coming,” he said. At the time, he described port management as “decent” and noted some improvements had already been made to the bulkhead, promising further upgrades by 2024. The current works reflect the follow-through on those earlier commitments.
A Strategic Boost for Tourism
Government officials, including Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley, have long promised infrastructure improvements for the territory’s sister islands. The upgraded terminal is expected to enhance tourism, improve cargo handling, and make travel safer and more comfortable for residents and visitors alike. The timing is ideal, with the 2025 Lobster Festival scheduled for November 28–30, offering a first test of the terminal’s new capabilities.
“This project is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure all ports of entry in the Virgin Islands meet international standards and provide a positive experience for travelers,” BVIPA said.
