The Trump administration has initiated a review of over 55 million individuals holding U.S. visas—including tourists, students and temporary workers—for potential violations that may lead to visa revocation or deportation, the State Department confirmed.
The effort expands upon an earlier program targeting student visa holders and broadens the scope to encompass all visa categories. Authorities cited “continuous vetting” procedures, which now include monitoring social media activity and requiring visa applicants to unlock electronic devices during interviews.
Since taking office, officials say they have revoked more than twice as many visas overall—and nearly four times as many student visas—as in the same period last year. Reports indicate that between 200 and 300 revocations involved terrorism-related concerns.
Additionally, the administration has suspended work visa issuance for commercial truck drivers, citing public safety concerns and the protection of American trucking jobs.
Experts caution that the expansion reflects a broader strategy to deter employers from hiring foreign workers and tighten enforcement on legal immigration.
