Governor Hosts Investiture Ceremony Honouring Julie Cooper With British Empire Medal

Gov. Daniel Pruce hosted an investiture ceremony recognising Julie Cooper, who was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for her contributions to the Virgin Islands community.

The ceremony, held on Thursday, November 13, formally presented Cooper with the medal as part of the United Kingdom’s honours system, which acknowledges individuals for exceptional community service, public work, or national contribution.

In announcing the presentation, Government House encouraged residents to consider nominating individuals who have made a significant impact in the Territory. “Do you know someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the community?” the Governor’s Office said in a statement.

Nominations for UK honours can be submitted year-round through the official website at gov.uk/honours/types-of-honours-and-awards, officials said. The deadline for the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours list is approaching.

The British Empire Medal is awarded for meritorious civil or military service and forms part of the broader UK Honours system, which also includes the MBE, OBE and CBE.
