The 2025 Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival is currently underway, with the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force’s (RVIPF) Family and Juvenile Unit calling on the public to remain vigilant in protecting young people from the dangers of underage alcohol consumption.
Child safeguarding efforts, the Unit stressed, require proactive measures to shield minors from harm, including the risks posed by alcohol, which can jeopardize their health and safety.
“We cannot afford a repeat of last year’s troubling incidents,” said Inspector [Full Name], head of the Family and Juvenile Unit. “During the 2024 Festival, numerous minors were found consuming alcohol, with several requiring medical attention. Already this year, one such case has been reported.”
Under Virgin Islands law, it is illegal for any establishment to sell alcoholic beverages to anyone under the age of 18, according to Chapter 106, Section 34 of the Liquor Licence Ordinance. Furthermore, Section 204(2)(c) of the Criminal Code — amended in 2013 — classifies the provision of intoxicating liquor to children under 16 by adults aged 18 or older as child cruelty, except when medically directed or in emergencies.
The RVIPF specifically reminded vendors, including booth owners, restaurants, supermarkets, and hotels, to strictly enforce these laws and refrain from selling or serving alcohol to minors. Likewise, all adults were urged not to purchase or supply alcohol to underage individuals under any circumstances.
“The safety and welfare of our children is paramount,” Inspector [Last Name] added. “Enforcing legal age restrictions on alcohol consumption is not only a legal obligation but a moral duty. We urge everyone to play their part in ensuring this year’s festival is safe, enjoyable, and free from incidents involving underage drinking.”
The police force concluded by calling on the entire community to remain alert and support ongoing efforts to protect youth throughout the festival celebrations. “Together, we can create an environment where children and families can enjoy the festival in safety and unity,” the Inspector said.
