Residents of Long Swamp, Fat Hogs Bay, Greenland, and nearby communities are being urged to register with the Water and Sewerage Department and connect to the public sewerage system before the end of 2026, government officials announced this week.
During a walkthrough of the Long Swamp Pump Station on Sept. 15, Minister for Communications and Works Kye Rymer said the government will cover installation costs for households that join the system. “This has been a project we recommissioned a few years ago,” Rymer said. “Today, we are here to update the public on its progress, our expected timeline for completion, and most importantly, to urge residents to connect to the sewerage system so they can flush with confidence.”
Premier and Seventh District Representative Natalio Wheatley and Eighth District Representative Marlon Penn also attended the walkthrough. Both stressed the importance of community cooperation in addressing long-standing sewerage runoff issues in the Seventh and Eighth Districts.
Wheatley said while connections are not yet mandatory, residents will not be allowed to discharge wastewater onto public roads. “I strongly encourage everyone to hook up as soon as possible. What cannot continue is wastewater flowing into the streets—that is not a matter of choice,” Wheatley said. “The best thing we can all do is connect to the system so that we don’t have to escalate enforcement measures. Let’s act responsibly, protect our environment, and keep our communities clean, beautiful, and healthy.”
Project officials said the Long Swamp Pump Station is nearing completion. Contractor Kern Mitchell of BioSafe Solutions and Project Manager Marquese Maduro reported that the project is about 85 percent finished. They are awaiting approval for a final road closure to install the last manhole and sewerage connection.
Mitchell thanked the government for awarding BioSafe Solutions the contract, adding that the project will divert wastewater from streets into the treatment facility at Paraquita Bay once commissioned.
