The Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports has reported improvements in teacher recruitment and retention, citing progress under the “Let’s Teach VI” initiative and expanded professional development opportunities.
According to the ministry, 12 new teacher trainees joined the initiative this year, bringing the total number of participants higher than in previous years. The programme also drew more than 200 applications, reflecting growing interest in the teaching profession.
Teacher retention rates have also improved. Resignations fell from 17 in 2023 to only one by May 2025. The ministry attributed the change to a combination of higher compensation and increased opportunities for professional growth.
More than 30 educators recently completed certificate programmes in teaching and leadership at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College. An additional 10 teachers are pursuing a postgraduate diploma in arts integration, supported by funding from Unite BVI.
The ministry said these initiatives are intended to strengthen the quality of instruction across the Territory’s schools while ensuring stability in the teaching workforce.
