Tropical Storm Erin formed Monday morning in the central Atlantic, approximately 2,400 miles east-southeast of the Virgin Islands, according to the National Hurricane Center. The system was packing sustained winds of 45 miles per hour and moving west at a brisk 20 m.p.h.
Meteorologists expect Erin to intensify rapidly, reaching hurricane strength by Wednesday and potentially becoming a major hurricane before the weekend. The current forecast track places the storm’s closest approach roughly 368 miles northeast of the British Virgin Islands as a major hurricane.
Officials warn that even a small shift to the south could bring significantly stronger winds, heavy squalls, high surf and coastal erosion, particularly affecting Anegada. Dangerous seas and rip currents are anticipated across the northern Leeward Islands and the Virgin Islands later this week, regardless of Erin’s exact path.
Emergency management agencies are urging residents to review hurricane preparedness plans, secure outdoor property and vessels, and ensure adequate supplies of food, water, medications, fuel and batteries. Authorities recommend monitoring official updates at least every 12 hours as the situation develops.
“Early preparation is the best protection,” officials said in a statement.
