British Virgin Islands long jumper Chantel Malone has secured a place in Sunday’s World Athletics Championships final after registering a leap of 6.62 metres in Saturday’s qualifying round.
Malone, a Pan American Games gold medallist, advanced with a solid performance that saw her finish fourth in her qualification group. She will line up in a competitive final alongside several of the world’s top contenders.
The 32-year-old holds the BVI national record with a personal best of 7.08 metres, set in Miramar, Florida, in 2021. She has previously placed in the top eight at both the World Championships and Pan American Games, and is also a NACAC Championships silver medallist.
This year marks a historic moment for the British Virgin Islands, with a record six athletes competing at the Championships, which began on 13 September and conclude on 21 September in Tokyo.
Joining Malone on Team BVI are Kyron McMaster, Rikkoi Brathwaite, Beyoncé Defreitas, Jaleel Croal, and Djimon Gumbs, all proudly representing the Territory on the world stage.
