The Virgin Islands are facing a second day of extreme heat, with “feels like” temperatures expected to again reach 107 degrees Fahrenheit, according to a Thursday, Aug. 14, advisory issued at 9:30 a.m. by the BVIDDM.
Officials said similar conditions on Wednesday produced heat index values considered dangerous for prolonged outdoor activity. The public is being urged to take precautions, including drinking water frequently, avoiding direct sun during peak hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and wearing light, breathable clothing. Children, the elderly and pets are considered especially vulnerable.
The advisory comes as the territory also prepares for the potential impact of Tropical Storm Erin. Authorities reminded residents that storm preparations should be carried out with attention to heat safety to prevent heat-related illnesses.
