British Virgin Islands artist Raul “Jougo” Sprauve has been awarded the Carifesta Music Icon Award following his performance at CARIFESTA XV in Barbados.
The award, presented during the region’s premier festival of arts and culture, recognizes Caribbean artists who demonstrate leadership, creativity, and excellence in music.
Sprauve, widely known across the territory as Jougo, said he was humbled by the honour. “I was surprised but extremely honored to receive the Carifesta’s Music Icon Award after my performance at CARIFESTA XV in Barbados this year. As the lyrics say, ‘Missed the elevator, had to take the stairs. Took a little while but guess what I’m here!’”
Jougo is the founder and lead of the popular band VIBE (Virgin Islands Based Entertainment) and owner of Homegrown Studios in Long Bush, where he continues to record, produce, and mentor young talent. His influence on the cultural scene has been recognized at home as well — in 2022, the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival was renamed the Raul ‘Jougo’ Sprauve Easter Festiville in his honor.
CARIFESTA XV, held in Barbados from August 22–31 under the theme “Caribbean Roots, Global Excellence,” brought together artists and performers from across the region to celebrate Caribbean heritage and creativity.
