The British Virgin Islands is beaming with pride as one of its own, Mr. Lucien Stoutt, has been featured in an inspiring international article titled “The Keeper of Excellence: Mr. Lucien Stoutt and the Quiet Power of Devotion,” written by Carmen Evelyn G. Nuyda on Substack.
The feature highlights Mr. Stoutt’s remarkable 36-year career as butler to the distinguished Lewis family of East Hampton, New York — first serving the late Mr. Reginald F. Lewis, the first African American to build a billion-dollar global business empire, and continuing in loyal service to his widow, Mrs. Loida Nicolas Lewis, philanthropist and business leader.
Described as “the quiet guardian of a legacy,” Mr. Stoutt is praised for his faith, precision, and grace — qualities that have earned him admiration in one of America’s most respected households.
A Legacy Rooted in Leadership
Mr. Stoutt’s story begins right here in the Virgin Islands, where his family name is synonymous with service and leadership. He is the nephew of the late Honourable Hamilton Lavity Stoutt, the Territory’s first Chief Minister and founder of the BVI’s only college that now proudly bears his name — H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.
Speaking with JTV, Mr. Stoutt said he is humbled to represent his homeland at an international level.
“I feel honored to uphold my family’s name and now serve as a beacon for the future generation to come as a Native Virgin Islander,” he shared.
Although his professional life keeps him between East Hampton, New York, and Ballast Bay, Mr. Stoutt remains deeply connected to his roots. He was last in the Territory in April 2025 for his mother Esmie Estene Stoutt’s 100th birthday celebration, and again in July 2025 for his sister Shirleen Stoutt’s retirement from the Social Security Board.
A Family of Service
The Stoutt family continues to play an active role in the development of the Territory. Among Lucien’s siblings are Denzil Clyne, Prince Alford Stoutt (of Stoutt Lookout Bar), Wilford “Willow” Stoutt, Berenice Stoutt (Best Kakes and Pastries), Janice Stoutt (Attorney-at-Law), Andre “Shadow” Dawson (Photographer), Shirleen Stoutt, MacNeil Stoutt (The Moorings BVI), Joycelyn Hoyte (Pastoral Affairs), and Carolyn Stoutt-Igwe, who serves as Permanent Secretary in the Premier’s Office.
He is also the uncle of Deputy Governor Mr. David Archer Jr., further cementing the Stoutt family’s longstanding tradition of leadership and service.
Niece Amethyst Clyne Straker, who proudly shared the international feature, expressed her admiration: “As a niece, I am very keen and proud of my uncle. He is definitely a role model for me, as his life shows that true leadership should always begin in a service role. He often says, ‘To serve well is to serve God.’ That wisdom I have held close.”
