Beyoncé Defreitas and Jaleel Croal represented the Virgin Islands at the World Athletics Championships on September 17 but were unable to move past the opening round of the 200 meters.
Defreitas, running in the women’s event, placed fifth in her heat with a time of 22.30 seconds, missing out on the top-three automatic qualifying spots needed to advance.
Croal, making his World Championships debut, ran one of the fastest non-qualifying times of the round. He clocked 20.46 seconds to finish fourth in Heat 5 — just 0.03 seconds shy of moving on.
Though the pair did not advance, their performances added to the territory’s continued presence on the international track and field stage.
