British Virgin Islands sprint record holder Rikkoi Brathwaite fell just short of advancing to the 100m semi-finals at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Brathwaite finished fourth in Heat 5 on Saturday with a time of 10.23 seconds, which was not enough to qualify for the next round.
The heat was won by Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, the reigning Olympic 200m champion and 2023 Worlds silver medallist over 100m, in 10.07 seconds.
Canada’s Andre De Grasse secured second place in 10.16, while Courtney Lindsey of the USA claimed the final automatic qualifying spot with 10.19.
Brathwaite, 25, remains the fastest sprinter in the Territory, holding the national 100m record of 10.00 seconds, as well as the 60m indoor record of 6.52 seconds, clocked in 2022.
He is part of a record six‑athlete BVI team attending the Championships.
