DDM Monitoring Two Tropical Waves in the Atlantic

The Department of Disaster Management is monitoring two tropical waves in the Atlantic, one of which could bring rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds to the Virgin Islands this weekend.

The first system is moving toward the Lesser Antilles and may develop into a tropical depression near or just north of the territory, according to the DDM. Showers are possible on Friday, with heavier rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds expected from Saturday afternoon into Sunday. Officials warned of unsettled weather, rough seas and the potential for localized flooding in low-lying areas. Small craft operators were advised to exercise caution.

The second wave, designated AL99, is farther east in the Atlantic and showing signs of short-term development. However, forecasters said environmental conditions ahead are less favorable, and the system poses no immediate threat.

The DDM urged residents to monitor official updates from the agency and the National Hurricane Center, secure outdoor items and prepare for deteriorating weather conditions over the weekend.
