Acting Commissioner Jacqueline Vantepool Responds Amid Public Support Following Governor’s Decision
Following days of robust public advocacy and leadership support, Acting Commissioner of Police Jacqueline Vantepool has issued a heartfelt public statement responding to the Governor’s decision to revert her to her substantive post as Deputy Commissioner of Police, effective November 18.
The statement comes in the wake of vocal community and political support, including two days of organized activities with legislators, leaders, and community members taking to the microphone —among them Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Honourable Natalio D Wheatley.
Vantepool’s Statement of Commitment, Gratitude, and Resilience
In her statement issued earlier today November 12, Ms. Vantepool addressed the people of the Virgin Islands directly, expressing her deep gratitude for the overwhelming support she has received during this period of transition.
“For more than a year, I took on the responsibilities of Acting Commissioner with dedication and a strong sense of duty, including times when I served without any Deputies or Assistant Commissioners in place,” she said.
“I accepted the task fully, worked hard, and remained committed to making the necessary changes within the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force to better protect and serve the people of this Territory.”
Acknowledging the decision to step back from the acting role, she remained resolute in her confidence and commitment.
“It is unfortunate that the decision has been taken for me to step back from the role. However, I am still confident that I can maintain leadership with resilience,” Ms. Vantepool affirmed.
“The achievements made under my acting leadership are well documented, and the improvements in operations, crime reduction, community engagement, and professionalism are already being felt.”
She emphasized that the support from within the Force and across the community has been a profound source of encouragement.
“That encouragement has meant more to me than words can express, and it reminds me of the trust that so many have placed in my leadership. It has propelled me even more,” she added.
Community and Leadership Rally Behind Vantepool
Public response to the Governor’s decision has been marked by strong expressions of support for Ms. Vantepool, seen by many as a capable Virgin Islander leader deserving of the Commissioner role.
On Monday, November 10, community members and leaders gathered for a protest rally in front of the Governor’s Office to voice their opposition to the decision.
This was followed by a virtual panel discussion on Tuesday, November 11, featuring prominent voices including Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Honourable Natalio D Wheatley, who publicly endorsed Ms. Vantepool’s leadership qualities and contributions.
Additional activities and advocacy events are planned throughout the week as the community continues to rally for local leadership recognition within the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force.
Governor’s Decision and Next Steps
While Ms. Vantepool’s statement remains the primary focus, it is important to note that Governor Daniel Pruce has officially confirmed the reversion of Ms. Vantepool to Deputy Commissioner, citing concerns about the extended period of acting leadership and organizational resilience.
Governor Pruce has recommended appointing an interim Acting Commissioner to serve temporarily, with the position fully funded by the United Kingdom.
Ms. Vantepool is expected to resume her substantive role on November 18, where she will continue to contribute her experience and expertise within the RVIPF’s senior leadership.
