Lower Fort Hill Road on Tortola was closed on Sunday, August 17, after an explosion at approximately 2 p.m. severed the upper section of a utility pole, causing a fire and an oil spill from the transformer.
The damaged pole was left hanging dangerously over the roadway, while a power line was reported hanging low. Fuel and transformer oil also spread across the road surface, officials said.
Emergency crews from the BVI Electricity Corporation and Fire and Rescue Service responded to the scene to extinguish the fire, secure the pole, and repair electrical lines.
Authorities urged the public to avoid Lower Fort Hill until the situation is resolved. No injuries were immediately reported.
