Grand Cultural Extravaganza to Mark Culmination of Culture and Tourism Month
A Vibrant Blend of Local Cuisine, Literary Arts, and Cultural Exhibits Await Attendees
In celebration of Culture and Tourism Month, the Department of Culture is set to host a Cultural Food Fair, Book and Art Expo today, November 24.
The event promises to immerse both residents and visitors in the rich tapestry of Virgin Islands culture through a captivating fusion of local delicacies, literary arts, and artistic expressions.
Deputy Director of Culture, Ms. Anne Lennard, expressed her enthusiasm for this staple event, highlighting its significance as one of the most anticipated occurrences during the month-long celebration. Anticipating a broader audience, Ms. Lennard revealed that this year’s food fair would go beyond the culinary realm, incorporating additional cultural traditions, activities, and exhibitions into the day-long festivities.
“We are thrilled to present not only your favorite local foods but also a mini book and art expo, showcasing and promoting the exceptional work of Virgin Islands creatives,” said Ms. Lennard, extending an open invitation to everyone to join the grand celebration. “It promises to be a grand time,” she added.
Commencing at 10:00 a.m. at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park, the day’s activities will unfold against the backdrop of the Territorial dish of fungi and fish, complemented by an array of local delights such as johnny cakes, saltfish, peas soup, stewed mutton, fish in mayonnaise sauce, maubi, ginger beer, limeade, and golden apple, as well as gooseberry juice.
A highlight of the day will be the Caribbean Insurers Limited Coconut Tart Competition, featuring 21 of the Territory’s finest bakers showcasing their culinary talents. Adding a melodic touch to the event, fungi bands like Zion Sounds and Four Strong will provide live entertainment, while cultural icon Mr. Elmore Stoutt will conduct a storytelling session, weaving tales that entertain, inform, and promote the rich traditions and values of the Virgin Islands.
Book enthusiasts will have the opportunity to peruse and purchase works from local authors, including Janice Nibbs, Andria Flax, Hildegarde Flax Shaw, Janice George Harris, Arona Fahie Forbes, Marilyn Malone Bass, Gracia Wheatley Smith, Catlyn Benjamin, David Turnbull, and the Late Carlile Scott.
The Cultural Food Fair, Book and Art Expo aims to create a lively atmosphere, offering attendees the chance to engage in culturally significant experiences through local cuisine, literary arts, metal craft, pottery, and other heritage exhibits and cultural activities.

BVI Monitors Cruise Ship Hantavirus Outbreak; Health Minister Says Local Risk Remains Low
The Ministry of Health and Social Development is monitoring an outbreak of hantavirus linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius that has resulted in several confirmed cases and three deaths, but Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley, Minister for Health and Social Development, and Dr. Ronald Georges, Chief Medical Officer, said Monday that the risk to the Virgin Islands remains low.
The ministry said the reported cases involve passengers and crew aboard the Dutch expedition vessel, which was operating outside the Caribbean region. Health officials said there is no evidence of any cases in the Virgin Islands or elsewhere in the Caribbean.
Honourable Wheatley said the ministry is working with regional and international partners, including the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), to monitor the situation and strengthen surveillance systems.
“At this time, the risk to the Caribbean, including the Virgin Islands, is considered low,” Dr. Georges said. “We are utilizing enhanced surveillance systems and maintaining routine port health inspections and preparedness protocols to ensure the continued protection of public health.”
Hantavirus is a rare but potentially serious disease that is primarily transmitted through contact with infected rodents or their droppings, urine or saliva. Human-to-human transmission is extremely uncommon.
The ministry said the rodent species typically associated with the virus are not commonly found in Caribbean environments, further reducing the likelihood of local transmission.
Residents are advised to avoid contact with rodents and areas where they may be present, safely clean and disinfect areas contaminated by rodent waste, maintain proper sanitation and waste disposal, and seek medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever or respiratory distress.
Early symptoms of hantavirus can resemble the flu but may progress to more serious respiratory complications if not treated promptly.
“We will continue to work closely with regional and international partners to ensure that any potential risks are identified early and managed effectively,” Dr. Georges said. “Protecting the health and safety of our residents remains our top priority.”
The Ministry of Health and Social Development said it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
