Fishing Season for Green and Hawksbill Turtles to Close from April 1 to November 30
Local fishers, stakeholders and the public are reminded of the upcoming closure of the fishing season for Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) and Hawksbill Turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) from April 1 to November 30.
According to Mr. Theodore James, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Regulation 26 of the Fisheries Regulations 2003 mandates the cessation of turtle fishing and the sale of turtle meat until December 1, when the fishing season reopens.
Regulation 22 outlines several prohibitions, including the disturbance, removal, sale, or possession of turtle eggs, interference with nesting turtles or nests, and the capture of undersized turtles. Additionally, setting nets or seines within 100 meters of the Virgin Islands’ shore for turtle fishing is strictly prohibited.
Mr. James emphasised that violating any of these provisions constitutes an offense punishable by a fine not exceeding one thousand dollars upon summary conviction.
To combat illegal turtle fishing activities during the closed season, the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries encourages the public to report such incidents by calling 468-9195 or emailing pictures and details to the department. Alternatively, individuals can contact the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force at 311 for land matters or at 368-5371 for marine matters.
The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries is committed to ensuring food safety, promoting environmentally sustainable practices, and safeguarding the natural environment while contributing to economic growth and social well-being.
