Hurricane Erin, a Category 5 storm, has moved out of the monitored area of the Leeward Islands and the British Virgin Islands, according to the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services in a statement issued at 9:02 a.m. Eastern Caribbean Time Saturday, Aug. 16. While tropical storm watches and alerts have been discontinued, the territory continues to experience occasional showers and gusty winds, particularly in Anegada and elevated areas across the islands, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) reported in an update at 11:40 a.m.
At 8 a.m., Erin’s center was located near latitude 19.6 North and longitude 62.0 West, about 120 miles northeast of the Leeward Islands. The storm was moving west-northwest at 20 mph, with a gradual decrease in forward speed expected. A turn toward the north is forecast early next week, with the system expected to pass just north of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico over the weekend.
The BVI DDM noted that unsettled weather, including brief heavy showers, gusty winds, and reduced visibility during squalls, is likely to continue, especially in Anegada. Residents were advised to secure loose items, limit marine activity, and monitor official updates closely.
BVI DDM reinforced the importance of vigilance as Erin tracks westward, despite no current direct threat to the territory.
