BVI Basketball Sensation D’Moi Hodge Joins Team Tortola for Caribbean Championship 2024 Showdown

British Virgin Islands basketball superstar  D’Moi Hodge is set to join Team Tortola for the Caribbean Championship 2024 at the Multipurpose Complex from April 4 to 7.

Fans will witness the battle for the Premier Cup, where the region’s top teams vie for supremacy on the hardwood.

This year’s tournament features a dynamic lineup of contenders, with Group A comprising Tola, Bahamas, and Sint Maarten, while Group B boasts VG, Santo, SKB, and Statia.

The action kicks off on Thursday, April 4, with a grand opening ceremony preceding three thrilling matchups. At 6 pm, SKB faces off against VG followed by a clash between Statia and Santo at 8 pm. The night concludes with Tola squaring off against SXM at 10 pm.

Friday, April 5, promises even more excitement as SKB takes on Statia at 6 pm, followed by VG battling Santo at 8 pm. The night’s finale sees Tola locking horns with Bahamas at 10 pm in what promises to be a clash of titans.

Saturday, April 6, sees the intensity reaching new heights with a full day of action-packed matchups. Starting at 8 am, Santo goes head-to-head with SKB, followed by VG versus Statia at 10 am, and Bahamas facing off against SXM at noon.

The crossover semifinals add another layer of drama as the winners and runners-up from each group battle for a spot in the championship round.

At 8 pm, the winner of Group B takes on the second-place finisher from Group A, followed by the much-anticipated King of the Court 3-Point Shootout. Then, at 10:00 pm, the winner of Group A clashes with the second-place finisher from Group B, setting the stage for an epic finale.

On Sunday, April 7th, the excitement continues with the third-place game at 7 pm, followed by the highly anticipated championship showdown at 9 pm.

The tournament concludes with an awards ceremony, where the standout performers will be celebrated.

Tickets are available for purchase at the gate, with adult admission priced at $10 and students under 16 able to attend for just $5. For fans looking to catch every moment of the action, season passes are available for $30 and can be purchased at Hazems Beauty Supplies.

Fishermen Charged in $34 Million Drug Bust

A joint operation between the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) Marine Unit and the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol late Thursday night resulted in the interception of a vessel carrying an estimated $34 million worth of cocaine.

The operation, which took place shortly after 11 p.m. on May 30, led to the discovery of multiple packages suspected to contain the illicit drug.

The three men aboard the vessel, identified as Julio Cabrera Martinez, 40, Tomas Balbuena Acosta, 55, and Remigio De Los Santos, 62, have been formally charged with Possession of a Controlled Drug and Possession of a Controlled Drug with Intent to Supply.

Commissioner Collins of the RVIPF remarked on the significant seizure, stating, “This significant bust underscores the RVIPF’s ongoing commitment to disrupting drug trafficking operations in the Virgin Islands.”

The suspects remain in custody awaiting their appearance at the Magistrate’s Court.

Cedar International School Students Lend a Hand at Local Parks

Six students from Cedar International School enthusiastically rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty in the name of conservation.

As part of their Service Learning – Experiential Education Programme, these young volunteers dedicated their time and energy to support the Joseph Reynold O’Neal Botanic Gardens and Sage Mountain National Park.

The initiative saw students tackling a variety of tasks, both big and small, from planting new flora to maintaining trails and cleaning up litter.

The National Parks Trust of the Virgin Islands praised their efforts in a recent Facebook post, highlighting the tangible difference the students made over the two days.

“The enthusiastic crew tackled jobs big and small and really helped,” the National Parks Trust stated. Their gratitude was palpable, reflecting the significant impact the students’ work had on the parks’ upkeep and preservation.

Cedar International School’s Service Learning – Experiential Education Programme is designed to blend community service with hands-on educational experiences.

The Joseph Reynold O’Neal Botanic Gardens, known for its lush landscapes and diverse plant species, benefitted greatly from the students’ efforts. Meanwhile, Sage Mountain National Park, home to the highest peak in the Virgin Islands, saw improved trails and a cleaner environment thanks to their hard work.

Department of Culture Hosts Workshop on Built Heritage and Archaeological Reconstruction

The Department of Culture conducted the “Virgin Islands Built Heritage and the Art of Archaeological Reconstruction” workshop on May 29, catering to senior secondary school students specialising in Technical Drawing.

Students from Bregado Flax Educational Centre, Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies and Elmore Stoutt High School attended the event, which took place at Cedar International School and the St. Philip’s Anglican Church Ruins and Heritage Site.

The morning session was led by Dr. Katherine Smith, Director of Culture and Dr. Allison Flax-Archer, Secretary General for the BVI National Commission for UNESCO. In the afternoon, the workshop was facilitated by Mr. Linton Toney, an Adjunct Lecturer at H.L. Stoutt Community College.

This educational initiative provided students with hands-on experience and insights into the preservation and reconstruction of the Virgin Islands’ built heritage, emphasising the importance of archaeological practices in maintaining the historical and cultural fabric of the community.
