Ministry of Health Unveils Guidelines for Consistent Diabetes Care

The Ministry of Health and Social Development is taking a proactive stance in enhancing the care and treatment of individuals with diabetes by introducing comprehensive guidelines for disease management.
Developed by the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), these guidelines aim to ensure that individuals with diabetes receive consistent and high-quality care, regardless of the healthcare facility they visit.
Dr. Ronald Georges, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), highlighted the significance of these guidelines in improving patient outcomes, reducing complications, and enhancing overall quality of life. “At the Territory level, this program will not only deliver better healthcare but also reduce costs,” Dr. Georges emphasized, expressing his enthusiasm for the potential impact of this initiative.
The launch of the guidelines is just the beginning of a comprehensive approach to diabetes care. The Ministry plans to reinforce its implementation through Continuous Medical Education (CME) sessions, which will focus on standardized assessment, care, and treatment for individuals with diabetes. This approach aims to seamlessly integrate the guidelines into the healthcare system.
“We want these guidelines to be seamlessly implemented within our healthcare system,” said Dr. Georges. “To achieve this, we will provide continuous education sessions, foster collaborations with the Diabetes Association and clinicians, and empower patients to take an active role in their own care.”
Dr. Georges further explained that the Ministry’s long-term vision includes conducting clinical audits to ensure the guidelines’ effective implementation. Additional education and training will be provided where necessary to ensure the sustainability of standardized diabetes care.
The official launch of the CARPHA Guidelines for the Management of Diabetes in Primary Care in the Caribbean will take place at the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital on Thursday, July 20 at 5:30 p.m. The event welcomes clinicians, individuals with diabetes, caregivers, and anyone with a vested interest in the topic. Attendees will have the opportunity to earn two CME hours.
The Ministry of Health and Social Development remains committed to safeguarding and promoting the health of the people of the Virgin Islands. By introducing these guidelines and fostering ongoing education, the Ministry aims to enhance the quality of diabetes care and improve the overall well-being of individuals living with the disease.
