Kansas City Chiefs beat Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl thriller

Kansas City Chiefs players celebrate Super Bowl 57 victory

The Kansas City Chiefs became NFL champions for the second time in four years after fighting back to claim a thrilling 38-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Seen as slight underdogs for Super Bowl 57, the Chiefs trailed for much of the game in Phoenix and were 27-21 down heading into the final quarter.

But despite limping after aggravating an ankle injury, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and veteran coach Andy Reid orchestrated a route back in front of 67,827 fans in the State Farm Stadium.

Mahomes, who was named the season’s Most Valuable Player for a second time last week, made touchdown passes to Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore to put Kansas City in front for the first time.

The Eagles levelled after a record-breaking third rushing touchdown by Jalen Hurts, followed by a two-point conversion by the third-year quarterback.

But a heroic 26-yard run by Mahomes made the ground for Harrison Butker to kick a game-winning field goal from 27 yards with eight seconds remaining.

Mahomes’ performance saw the 27-year-old become the first player since 1999 to win the season MVP, the Super Bowl and the Super Bowl MVP in the same season.

He has led the Chiefs to at least the AFC Championship game in all five seasons as a starter and many argued that, for the Reid-Mahomes era to be considered a dynasty, they had to win another Super Bowl.

“I am not going to say a dynasty yet, we are not done,” said Mahomes.

“I told you nothing was going to keep me off the field. I want to thank my team-mates – we challenged each other and it took everybody.”

On Reid, who coached Philly for 14 years before taking over at Kansas City in 2013, Mahomes added: “He’s one of the greatest coaches of all time. I think everybody knew that, but these last two Super Bowls kind of cemented that.

“To have someone that is such a great person who gets the best out of the players, you wanted to win those Super Bowls for him. It’s great that we did that.”

Reid, 64, said of Mahomes: “He wants to be the greatest player ever and that’s the way he goes about his business. And he does it humbly, there’s no bragging.

“The great quarterbacks make everybody around him better, including the head coach. So he’s done a heck of a job.”

It was both a historic and rare Super Bowl as the NFL’s showcase event came to Arizona’s state capital for a fourth time.

It was the first Super Bowl to feature two black quarterbacks and the first to feature brothers on opposing teams, namely Travis Kelce and his older brother Jason, the Eagles centre.

And it was rare because it featured the season’s best two teams and the best two players – Mahomes and Hurts, who traded blows in an epic.

It was the first time that the top seed in each Conference has reached the Super Bowl since 2018 – when the Eagles beat the New England Patriots 41-33 for their only previous Super Bowl win.

This is the highest-scoring Super Bowl since then but probably edged it for drama, with each team showing why they were so dominant during the regular season, both finishing with a 14-3 record.

Now Super Bowl 57 will be remembered for being much more than the ‘Kelce Bowl’, it is the game where the Chiefs delivered on their promise.

“It solidifies your greatness,” said Travis Kelce. “You didn’t get lucky once, it wasn’t beginners’ luck

“You can call it a dynasty – you can call it whatever you want. All I know is we’re coming back next year and our heart and mindset is on trying to get another.

“We were uncharacteristic in the beginning [of the game] but everyone had that look in their eye that they would leave it all out there on the field and that is what we did.”

Mahomes and Hurts trade blows in epic

It promised to be a shootout from the first quarter, as neither defence managed to stop their opposition doing the same as they have been doing all season.

Hurts already had the single-season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback and three more on Sunday extended it to 18.

The first capped the game’s opening drive, and the Chiefs replied with Mahomes finding Travis Kelce in the corner for the tight end’s career-best 16th touchdown of the season.

However, there were ominous signs for Kansas City in the second quarter, despite cancelling out Hurts’ 45-yard touchdown pass to AJ Brown as Nick Bolton returned a Hurts fumble for a defensive touchdown.

The Eagles starved the Chiefs of possession, Mahomes began limping heavily, Hurts punched in his second touchdown and Jake Elliott kicked a field goal to make it 24-14 at half-time.

The extended break for Rihanna’s half-time show gave Kansas City more time to treat Mahomes’ ankle and regroup, and whatever was said did the trick as they came out and put together a 10-play drive capped by a Isiah Pacheco score.

They thought they had snatched the lead moments later with another defensive touchdown by Bolton, only for the play to be reversed, and another Eagles field goal made it 27-21.

But two touchdowns in quick succession, both from well-designed passing plays from the Reid playbook that flummoxed the Philly defence, swung the game in Kansas City’s favour.

Hurts kept the Eagles in it but Mahomes’ scramble up the middle allowed the Chiefs to manage the clock before making the decisive score with just seconds left.

The best Super Bowl stats
– This is the first Super Bowl in which both teams scored at least 35 points
– Hurts became the first quarterback to rush for three touchdowns in a Super Bowl
– Hurts also set a Super Bowl record for rushing yards by a QB – 70
– Facing the team with the second most sacks in a single season in NFL history, the Chiefs’ offensive line didn’t allow Mahomes to be sacked once
– Mahomes became the 13th quarterback to win multiple Super Bowls
– Mahomes is the first player from the top four professional sports in the US to win multiple –MVPs and multiple championship MVPs within 2000 days of his debut (1869)
– Reid became the 15th coach to win multiple Super Bowls
– Reid is the first head coach/manager in the top four professional sports in the US to win multiple championships after winning none over his first 20 seasons

VIFAF Hosts Inaugural Outdoor Field Archery Championships at Paraquita Bay

Published

By

The Virgin Islands Field Archery Federation (VIFAF) has successfully staged its first Outdoor Field Championships, marking a significant step forward in the development of the sport locally. The three-day competition, held at Paraquita Bay from April 10–12, 2026, brought together a mix of local and international archers for a demanding test of skill and endurance.

The event featured three distinct formats, beginning with the Field Round on April 10, followed by the Hunter Round on April 11, and concluding with the Animal Round on April 12. Each discipline presented unique challenges, requiring competitors to adjust to varying distances, terrain, and target styles—core elements of field archery.
Participation from overseas athletes added prestige and competitive depth to the championships. Among the visiting archers were Sherwin Francis, President of the Field Archery Association of Trinidad and Tobago, and experienced United States archer Julie Robinson.
The championships represent VIFAF’s third major event since its establishment, following the David Abednego Cup Indoor Championship in October 2025 and the 2026 VI NASP Nationals in March. The successful execution of these events underscores the federation’s growing capacity and commitment to expanding archery within the Virgin Islands.
Strong Performances Across Divisions
In the Adult Male Freestyle Unlimited category, Sherwin Francis delivered a commanding performance, finishing first with a score of 1505 while maintaining his A classification. Local competitors Kerry Ottley (1358) and Xavier Buxo (901) placed second and third respectively.
Ritseeniyah Georges-Buxo led the Adult Female Freestyle Unlimited division, posting a total of 1320 and retaining her B classification.
Julie Robinson competed in the Veteran Female Longbow category, recording a score of 677. Her participation offered local spectators a rare opportunity to see longbow archery at a high level. Despite describing the course as “brutal,” Robinson improved her Animal Round performance significantly, surpassing her previous record by 64 points and expressing appreciation for the experience of competing in the Virgin Islands.
In the junior ranks, national archer Ava Ghiorse stood out in the Junior Female Freestyle Recurve category with a total score of 783, earning her first classification at the C level. Fellow newcomer Kerry Ottley also achieved his initial B classification, signaling continued growth among local athletes.
Building Momentum for the Future
VIFAF President Reuben Stoby praised the successful staging of the event while acknowledging the logistical challenges involved.
“I am happy that we were able to complete our first outdoor championships. We did have some difficulties finding a suitable location. We wish to thank the Department of Agriculture and the management of H. Lavity Stoutt Community College for allowing us to use their lands at Paraquita Bay. We look forward to hosting more of these with greater participation from local archers,” he said.
Stoby also noted that hosting the championships was a critical step toward securing full membership with the International Field Archery Association (IFAA).
With its first outdoor championships now complete, VIFAF is expected to expand its competition calendar and continue fostering opportunities for archers throughout the territory. The success of the Paraquita Bay event suggests that field archery in the Virgin Islands is gaining momentum.

The federation also extended thanks to sponsors Walkers and Mr. Rentals for their support of the championships.

Adaejah Hodge of the British Virgin Islands ran a world-leading 10.77 seconds in the women’s 100 meters at the Tom Jones Memorial in Gainesville, Florida, on April 18, setting a national record and moving to No. 2 on the NCAA all-time list.

Hodge, a freshman at the University of Georgia, recorded the fastest time in the world this year and broke the British Virgin Islands national record with the performance at Percy Beard Track. The mark also ranks as the second-fastest time in collegiate history, trailing only the 10.75 run by Sha’Carri Richardson in 2019.

The race was held as part of the Tom Jones Memorial meet, where Hodge finished first in the final. Florida State’s Shenese Walker placed second in 10.80 seconds, while South Carolina’s Alexis Brown finished third in 11.04 seconds.

Hodge’s time of 10.77 seconds was recorded with a legal wind reading of 1.7 meters per second and also established a new University of Georgia school record.

The result adds to a series of performances by Hodge during her freshman season, during which she has posted leading times in both indoor and outdoor competition.

Smith Calls for Return of Horse Racing, Says Community Life Needs Revival

Published

on

By

Businessman Lesmore Smith is calling for the return of horse racing and community-based events in the British Virgin Islands, arguing that the absence of social activities since 2022 has contributed to a decline in community life across the territory.

Speaking on the Talking Points program, Smith said restoring horse racing — once a central feature of cultural and social life — would help reconnect communities following disruptions caused by hurricanes and the Covid-19 pandemic.

“When you take away the social life from people, it takes them into another dimension,” Smith said.

Horse racing in the Virgin Islands has been largely dormant since 2022, when events at Ellis Thomas Downs in Sea Cows Bay were halted amid a dispute between the government and private landowners over lease agreements. The government issued a ban on the use of sections of the track that same year, forcing the cancellation of scheduled races and leaving the territory without an active racing venue.

The facility, long considered the territory’s primary horse racing venue, has remained closed as negotiations between the government and landowners have failed to produce an agreement. The last official race card was held on Aug. 2, 2022, before the dispute escalated.

The closure has had a ripple effect on the local racing community, with some horse owners relocating animals to neighboring jurisdictions such as St. Thomas, while others have exited the sport entirely.

Smith, who has been involved in horse racing through the Horseowners’ Association, said the sport extends beyond competition and plays a broader role in community cohesion.

“Horse racing is not just a sport for me. It’s a social event for people of all ages,” he said.

He said the loss of such events has left few opportunities for residents to gather outside of work and religious settings, particularly in the years following Hurricane Irma in 2017 and the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We go to work, we go to church, and then what next?” Smith said. “We need to find a common ground.”

Smith also suggested that community-driven initiatives — including district-level events such as weekend gatherings and shared meals — could help rebuild social connections while broader efforts to restore horse racing continue.

Horse racing has historically been a major part of the territory’s cultural identity, particularly during Emancipation Festival celebrations, where events at Ellis Thomas Downs drew large crowds and regional participation.

Despite ongoing efforts by government officials to resolve the dispute and revive the facility, no timeline has been announced for the return of racing.

Smith said that whether or not he enters politics, he intends to continue advocating for initiatives that bring communities together.

“We need to bring people back together,” he said.
