The Government of the Virgin Islands will begin legal action in 30 days against residents with unauthorised water connections unless they regularise their accounts with the Water and Sewerage Department, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Communications and Works.
The ministry said the move comes as water has been declared a national priority, citing its role in sustaining communities, supporting the economy, and securing future supplies. Officials noted that unauthorised connections and irregular billing practices place an unfair burden on paying customers.
Residents with unregistered or unlawful connections have been invited to visit the department to correct their accounts within the 30-day grace period. The ministry emphasised that during this period, no penalties will be imposed.
“Such practices are unlawful, unsustainable, and place an unfair burden on law-abiding citizens,” the statement read. “This is an opportunity for customers to come forward and correct their accounts without penalty.”
After the deadline, the government said it will enforce compliance and pursue legal action without further notice. Officials urged residents to act responsibly and contribute to the sustainable management of the territory’s water resources.
