Premier and Minister of Finance Hon. Dr. Natalio D. Wheatley said the Virgin Islands Government is monitoring the global economic impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, warning that rising fuel prices, shipping costs and the cost of essential goods could affect the territory.
Speaking during a press briefing on regional and international affairs on Friday, March 5, at the Cutlass Tower in Road Town, Dr. Wheatley said the government has already begun assessing the potential risks to the local economy.
“We are closely monitoring the situation in the Middle East and its effects on global fuel prices, shipping costs, and the cost of essential goods,” Dr. Wheatley said.
The Premier said technical working groups have been established and are engaging with fuel importers, the BVI Electricity Corporation and members of the business community to evaluate immediate and long-term impacts.
The measures are intended to identify practical steps to reduce pressure on households and businesses as global conditions evolve.
The warning comes as the conflict in the Middle East continues to affect global markets. Ongoing tensions involving key shipping routes and energy-producing regions have contributed to volatility in oil prices and disruptions in international trade. Shipping delays and increased insurance costs for cargo vessels have also been reported in parts of the region, adding pressure to supply chains.
Small island economies such as the Virgin Islands are particularly exposed to these shifts, as they rely heavily on imported fuel and goods. Any sustained increase in global oil prices or freight costs can translate into higher electricity bills, transportation costs and retail prices locally.
Dr. Wheatley said the government is also accelerating efforts to expand renewable energy as part of a longer-term strategy to reduce dependence on imported fuel.
“As a Government, our responsibility is to safeguard the welfare of our people,” he said.
He added that the government will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as the situation evolves.
