The Jamaica Court of Appeal ruled today Wednesday, July 31,  against a retrial for dancehall icon Vybz Kartel in the murder case of Clive “Lizard” Williams, whose body was never found.

The court’s unanimous decision stated, “the interest of justice does not require a new trial,” citing the psychological and financial impact on the appellants, particularly Kartel’s severe health conditions. His defense described inhumane conditions since his 2011 incarceration, including a brick cell with no air circulation, no water, and a bucket for a toilet.

A 2023 medical affidavit highlighted Kartel’s worsening Graves’ Disease and heart condition, warning of fatal consequences without surgery. The court noted sufficient evidence suggesting Kartel wouldn’t survive a potentially longer sentence if retried.

Kartel, real name Adidja Palmer, and his three co-defendants have been imprisoned since their 2014 conviction. The British Privy Council had quashed his conviction this spring, allowing the Jamaican court to decide on a retrial or acquittal.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
