The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has charged a man in connection with a series of burglaries and attempted break-ins after video footage shared by homeowners on social media led to his arrest.
Akim Stevens, described by authorities as having no fixed address, has been formally charged with burglary and attempted burglary following reports of incidents in Diamond Estate, Spooners Estate, and Anderson Estate.
Commissioner of Police Jacqueline Vanterpool acknowledged the public concern generated by the videos and assured residents that law enforcement is actively addressing the incidents.
“We are aware of the videos being circulated showing individuals attempting to enter homes, and we understand the real fear and anxiety this has caused for residents in the affected communities,” Vanterpool said in a statement. “Let me assure the public that we are taking these incidents seriously, and this arrest is a direct result of the swift action of the police and the cooperation of the BVI public.”
Authorities also refuted claims that Stevens had escaped custody and was later re-apprehended, dismissing the allegations as false. The RVIPF stated that Stevens, identified as a person of interest, was observed by officers, pursued, and taken into custody without incident. He remains detained pending his appearance before the Magistrate’s Court.
The RVIPF has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the Intelligence Unit at 368-9339 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 800-8477.
