Both public and private schools across the British Virgin Islands will participate in “Reading is Fun Week 2024,” set to take place from October 7 to 11. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Education, will be observed under the theme, “Reading Transforms You.” and will foster a love for reading among students.

Janice George-Harris, Education Officer for English, emphasized the significance of the event, not just for students, but for the entire community. “We encourage everyone to take time during this week to read and share excerpts from books with others,” she said. “A community that reads is a community that progresses. Reading transforms you. Book donations to schools and public libraries are also welcome. Let’s read, BVI read.”

Throughout the week, a number of engaging activities will be held, designed to bring the joy of reading to the forefront. Among these are student-created bulletin boards, news clips presented by students on platforms like 284 Media and ZBVI radio, and community readings posted on the Government of the Virgin Islands’ website and social media pages.

One of the highlights will be the “Book Talks” series, hosted by April Glasgow, where local poets and authors will share excerpts from their works. Additionally, students and adults will present book excerpts and discuss how reading has influenced their critical thinking and decision-making in real-life situations.

The East End, Long Look Community Library will host special readings from selected schools, alongside e-book presentations on October 9 and 10, running from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. daily.

As part of the ministry’s broader goals, Reading is Fun Week not only seeks to improve literacy but to enhance the educational experience and expand access to recreational activities for all residents of the Virgin Islands.

Readers can follow the week’s activities and view videos on the Government of the Virgin Islands’ Facebook page at @BVIGovernment.
