Bayside Blazers is preparing to represent the British Virgin Islands (BVI) alongside Skillful Ballers in the annual Dreams to Reality Foundation ‘Battle of the Fittest’ (BOTF) Basketball Tournament. Scheduled for July 14-20, 2024, the tournament will showcase nightly action at the LB Scott Sports Auditorium in Philipsburg, Dutch St. Maarten.
Manager Julian Willock expressed anticipation for the upcoming competition, highlighting the team’s proactive stance during the absence of local league play. “While awaiting the BVI Basketball Federation to initiate local leagues such as the Hon Fraser Save the Seed League, our players have remained active, preparing us well for international competition,” Willock explained.
Willock underscored the tournament’s significance in promoting the sport and nurturing player development. He credited initiatives like the Virgin Gorda Basketball League and the efforts of individuals such as Steve E. Parillon and Eustace C. Freeman for sustaining basketball interest and competitiveness across the Virgin Islands.
The final roster for the Bayside Blazers is yet to be confirmed, with Willock expecting announcements in the coming days, including the inclusion of overseas players. Local talents expected to shine for the Virgin Gorda-based team include Kimani T. Stevens, Shamarr A. George, Norville S. Carey, and Dione M. Blyden. Coaching duties for the VG Bayside Blazers will be overseen by Brian S. Brewley, known as ‘Bash’, with Trevor M. Stevens, also known as ‘West’, serving as the team trainer.
While sponsorship from Biras Creek Resort and Skelton Group of Companies has been secured, Willock continues efforts to secure additional funding to ensure the team’s optimal preparation and participation in the tournament.
With the Virgin Islands fielding two teams in the BOTF Basketball Tournament, the Bayside Blazers are poised to represent Virgin Gorda with determination and skill, aiming to make their mark on the regional stage.
