Flash Flood Warning Issued for the British Virgin Islands

The Department of Disaster Management has issued a flash flood warning for the British Virgin Islands, effective until 8:30 PM tonight June 5.  The warning alerts residents to the potential for minor flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

JTV has obtained videos from Pockwood Pond and Carrot Bay, revealing severe flooding in the areas. The footage shows individuals stranded in their vehicles, unable to move as water rushes downhill due to the heavy rainfall.

This flash flood warning indicates that creeks and drainage systems could rise and possibly overflow, leading to water on streets and in vulnerable areas. While significant property damage is not expected, residents are advised to anticipate inconveniences and exercise caution, as flooding can create hazardous driving conditions.

“Even a foot of moving water can sweep vehicles off the road,” the weather service warned. “If you encounter flooded roads, be cautious and remember: Turn around, don’t drown. Seek higher ground if necessary.”

The current weather conditions are being influenced by a persistent wave over the northeast Caribbean, causing intermittent heavy rainfall across the region. In the past one to two hours, some areas have already received up to an inch of rain, with forecasts predicting an additional inch or more over the next six hours.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service will continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents are encouraged to stay informed by tuning into local radio and TV stations for the latest updates. For further information, please call 463-4638.

Stay safe and remain vigilant as the weather situation develops.
