The Records Management Centre recently inaugurated an open house, aiming to raise public awareness about the essentiality of record-keeping practices during hazardous occurrences.

This event, commemorating Records MayDay 2024, spotlighted the Centre’s crucial responsibility in protecting the invaluable records of the Public Service.

Records MayDay, an annual observance instituted by the Society of American Archivists, traces its origins back to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina’s devastating impact on the US Gulf Coast in 2005. The catastrophe underscored the urgent need for disaster preparedness in record management, prompting the establishment of this commemorative day. Its significance lies in advocating for the proper protection and preservation of records in the face of natural disasters, ensuring that vital information remains intact for future generations.

Ms. Sandra Herbert, Records Manager at the Centre, emphasised the crucial role of the Public Service in securing records from potential hazards like earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and fires.

Reflecting on the lessons learned from the catastrophic events of 2017, she stressed the imperative of prioritising the security and preservation of historical records that chronicle the Territory’s evolution.

During the open house, visitors were enlightened on practical measures to safeguard records from various calamities, including flooding and fires. They also gained insights into the essential components of a disaster kit tailored for record preservation. Additionally, attendees witnessed firsthand the ongoing restoration efforts for records compromised during the passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. From document assessment to digital filing, the Records Management Centre’s meticulous process ensures the preservation of vital historical documents.

The open house also provided an exclusive opportunity for guests to tour the Centre, offering a glimpse into its transformation into a cutting-edge records facility while bolstering support for the Public Service’s operations.

At its core, the Records Management Centre is dedicated to enhancing governmental efficiency and informed decision-making by safeguarding the legacy of the Public Service through meticulous record preservation.
