Minister for Works, the Honourable Kye M. Rymer, revealed the successful re-commissioning of the Burt-Point Waste Water Treatment Plant on Tortola, undertaken by the Government of the Virgin Islands. The restoration efforts entailed a substantial investment totaling $2.6 million.

Minister Rymer emphasised the immediate implementation of measures to prevent sewerage dumping at the Road Town pump station, directing it instead to the upgraded Burt Point pump station. “The plant, which was previously out of service, has now been upgraded and is fully operational,” stated Honourable Rymer. He further explained that the plant now offers tertiary-level sewage treatment, benefiting communities including Baugher’s Bay, Free Bottom, Purcell, and more, ensuring enhanced sanitation and environmental protection.

The re-commissioning marks a crucial milestone in the National Sewerage Programme, aimed at establishing safe and sustainable sewage treatment facilities across the Virgin Islands. It includes the completion of projects in East End/Long Look and the installation of a treatment plant in Cane Garden Bay.

Upgrades to the Burt-Point facility encompass the installation of new equipment and infrastructure, enhancing efficiency and reliability. The plant now meets higher standards in sewage treatment, mitigating environmental impact and promoting public health.
