Mervin Hastings Appointed Acting Labour Commissioner, Vows to Uphold Worker Rights

Mr. Mervin Hastings has assumed the role of Acting Labour Commissioner within the Department of Labour and Workforce Development, effective March 1, 2024.

This appointment follows the retirement of Ms. Michelle Mclean, the former Labour Commissioner.

Mr. Hastings brings a wealth of experience to his new position, boasting 34 years of service in the Public Service sector. Notably, he served as Acting Deputy Chief Conservation and Fisheries Officer from 2010 to 2020 and held the position of Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change for the past three years.

Upon his appointment, Mr. Hastings expressed his dedication to advancing good labour management practices and safeguarding the rights, wages, working conditions, safety, health, and welfare of workers across the Virgin Islands. “I am honored to take on this role and remain committed to upholding the highest standards of labour governance,” remarked Mr. Hastings.

The Government of the Virgin Islands has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a conducive environment for workers and employers alike, underlining the importance of fair and equitable labour practices. As Mr. Hastings assumes his new responsibilities, stakeholders anticipate a steadfast approach to labour management and the protection of worker rights under his stewardship.
