Increased Seismic Activity Detected at Kick ’em Jenny Volcano Raises Concerns
Recent upticks in seismic activity have prompted authorities to maintain the alert level for the Kick ’em Jenny submarine volcano at YELLOW.
Grenada’s National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA) announced that the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Center (UWI SRC) alerted them to the elevated seismicity, which commenced on February 9 at 11:14 pm and continues to date.
The most significant seismic event, measuring 3.3, occurred on February 10, with reports indicating that tremors were felt in the northern parts of Grenada.
NaDMA stated that the UWI SRC will diligently monitor the situation and provide regular updates. Currently, four fully operational seismic stations in northern Grenada are dedicated to monitoring Kick ’em Jenny.
Situated eight kilometers north of Grenada, Kick ’em Jenny is the sole active submarine volcano in the Eastern Caribbean. The surge in activity, beginning on February 9 and lasting until February 10, has drawn attention from experts.
According to the UWI SRC, seismic activity has significantly diminished in magnitude and frequency since the early hours of February 11, nearly coming to a halt.
