Massive Fire Breaks Out At Pockwood Pond Waste Dump Site

Residents of District 1 awoke to an unsettling sight as a waste fire erupted at Pockwood Pond. District 1 Representative and Junior Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, the Honourable Karl Dawson, took to the airwaves to explain the situation and assure residents that measures were being taken to control the blaze.

“For those of you awakening to the smell of smoke, like me, there is a waste fire at Pockwood Pond. It is not a landfill fire but a fire of the waste area alongside the building where the lorries dump before the material is transported up the hill to the landfill,” explained Hon. Dawson.

Fire and Rescue teams are currently on site, working diligently to contain and extinguish the fire. The situation is being closely monitored, with additional fire tenders expected to join the fight.

Dawson provided details about the direction in which the fire and smoke were heading. “Currently, the fire and smoke are trending up the hill towards the west and northwest, which is bad for persons living here but it is at the moment preserving the building, the destruction of which would pose long-term difficulties.”

He reassured residents that the Director of Waste Management is aware of the situation, and that efforts are being coordinated to minimise the impact of the fire on the community. Despite the size of the blaze, there is optimism that it will be soon contained.

“In the meantime, try as best as you could to protect yourselves and your families from smoke inhalation,” urged Dawson. The safety of residents is of utmost importance, and precautions should be taken to minimise health risks associated with the smoke.
