After over a year of inactivity, the Waste Management Department is working diligently to bring the incinerator at Pockwood Pond back online, according to the Director of the department, Mr. Marcus Solomon.

In pursuit of this goal, Mr. Solomon, along with Waste Management Officer Mr. Neville Allen, recently visited Consutech Systems LLC, the manufacturer of the plant, located in Richmond, Virginia, United States. Mr. Solomon described the trip as “beneficial,” as it provided an opportunity to assess the status of outstanding contract agreements.

“We are now in a better position for a positive outcome, as we aim to replace the spare parts required to make the incinerator functional by the end of the year,” Mr. Solomon stated.

To ensure improved compliance with the contractual arrangement, several measures have been initiated. Mr. Solomon explained, “We have established guidelines for shipping, set new timelines, implemented a process to account for progress and delays, and introduced penalties, including contract termination.”

The director expressed hope that the recent trip has strengthened the relationship between both parties, allowing for continued mutual benefits in the future.

The Pockwood Pond incinerator has remained offline since February 2022. In light of this, the public is reminded to play their part in assisting the department by diverting waste from Pockwood Pond whenever possible. Individuals are encouraged to rinse and separate plastic, glass, and aluminum household waste and utilize the Territory’s “We Recycle” program.

The Department of Waste Management remains committed to preserving the natural beauty of the Territory. By utilizing cutting-edge waste management technology, the department ensures timely collection, disposal, and, whenever feasible, recycling of waste materials.
