Commonwealth Parliamentary Association To Observe BVI General Election

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association will observe the April 24 General Election in the British Virgin Islands, confirms Governor John Rankin.

In a press statement issued the morning, the governor said the invitation was issued after consultation with the Premier and Leader of the Virgin Islands Party Natalio Wheatley and the Leader of the Opposition and Progressive United Julian Fraser.

The Mission is an independent team of eight international observers, including parliamentarians, officials and analysts, who will evaluate whether the electoral process adheres to international obligations and domestic laws.

The CPA team is expected to arrive in the territory on April 17 and depart on April 27.

This will be the fourth election in the BVI that the CPA have observed since 2011.

According to the statment, the CPA has already reached out to key stakeholders, including officials, candidates, civil society, and members of the public.

Meetings with the observer team will take place before electiom day and their Initial findings will be published on Wednesday, April 26 April.

A Final Report will be made available within two months of the election date.
