Elections 2023
Today Is Nomination Day
Politicians across the British Virgin Islands will today be officially nominated to contest the April 24 General Election.
Election Day is Monday, April 24.
The Office of the Supervisor of Election explained that Section 25 of the Elections Act states that every candidate for election must be nominated by at least two registered voters of the electoral district they are seeking to represent in the House of Assembly.
Consent to nomination must be given on nomination paper and attested by one witness; and the candidate will swear to an affidavit that to the best of their knowledge, they are not disqualified under the provisions of the Constitution from contesting.
Meanwhile, Section 26 of the Elections Act states that a candidate, or someone on their behalf, must deposit with the Returning Officer, on or before nomination day, the sum of five hundred dollars. If the fee is not paid, the nomination will be withdrawn.
A total of 42 politicians are expected to be nominated today.
In 2019, 41 candidates were nominated for the February 25 general election which was won by the Virgin Islands Party (VIP).
A total of 16, 131 persons are registered to vote this year.
