BVI’s Diamante Gumbs earns silver medal in Alabama

(JTV News) – British Virgin Islands athlete Diamante Gumbs performed creditably at the Southland Indoor Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama, USA on Sunday, finishing second in the men’s weight throw.

Gumbs, who was representing Northwestern State University where he’s a junior, threw the implement 18.39m or 60 feet and 4 inches.

He fouled three attempts and had two other legal throws of 18.14m and 17.77m, besides his second-place distance.

Garrett Stokes, a sophomore at the University of the Incarnate Word, won the event with a distance of 18.62m or 61 feet and 1.25 inches.

Terrell Webb, a junior at Southeastern Louisiana University, copped third place with 18.36m.

Earlier this season, Diamante and his brother Djimon competed at the Jan. 13-14 Texas Tech University Corky Invitational.

Gumbs placed ninth in the weight throw, tossing the implement 16.82m (55’-2 1/4”).

Later, Djimon and Diamante secured a first and eighth place finish, respectively, in the shot put event, tossing the implement a distance of 17.44m (57’ 2 3/4”) and 16.08m (52’ 9 3/4”), respectively.
