The British Virgin Islands Football Association (BVIFA) said, with immediate effect, it will boost security at events after a violent clash broke out at the end of a match between Elmore Stout High School from Tortola and Bregado Flax Educational Centre from Virgin Gorda at a venue in East End/Long Look on Wednesday, Jan. 8.
JTV News understands that at least one person sustained injuries, but the victim’s medical condition is unknown. Police are investigating the matter, the BVIFA said.
It is also not clear what caused the brawl.
Below is the full statement from the BVIFA
It is with great sadness that the FA learnt of the incident at it’s East End / Long Look venue following the conclusion of a Schools football match between Elmore Stout High School and Begrado Flax Educational Centre, from Virgin Gorda.
Whilst the incident was after the successful conclusion of the football match and seemingly caused by a group of youths with no connection to the game, the FA, through the office of its President, Mr. Andy Bickerton, has been quick to state that such actions have no place in sport or at a venue primarily serving sports and young people
“With over 10 years’ experience of organizing games between Island teams we have never encountered outside violence of this, or any kind,” stated Mr. Bickerton. “The BVIFA does not condone nor will it tolerate violence and we will do everything we can to assist the police in their investigation of the matter.”
Mr. Bickerton also went on to add that as an immediate effect of the incident, the FA will boost security around the field to ensure the future safety of its players, officials, coaches and fans.
The FA will be making no further comments until the conclusion of the police investigation and has every faith that the authorities will view the video footage and take the appropriate action.
