The British Virgin Islands will be well represented on the global stage later this month as sprinters Beyoncé Defreitas and Rikkoi Brathwaite prepare to compete at the 2025 World Indoor Championships in Tokyo. The BVI Athletics Association officially announced their selection for the prestigious competition, set to take place from March 21 to 23 at the Nanjing Sports Training Center.

Brathwaite, a semi-finalist at last year’s Indoor World Athletics meet, will take to the track on March 21 for the 60m preliminaries at 9:10 a.m. local time. If he advances, he will return for the semifinals at 4:10 p.m. the same day. Defreitas will follow on March 22, with her 60m preliminaries scheduled for 7:15 a.m. and semifinals at 4:15 p.m.

The BVI is aiming to add to its medal count at the World Indoor Championships, with its sole podium finish coming in 2008 when Tahesia Harrigan-Scott secured bronze in the 60m sprint in Valencia, Spain. Now, Brathwaite and Defreitas look to make history once again for their nation.

Accompanying the athletes will be Ralston Henry, a World Athletics-certified senior coach, who will serve as both coach and team manager for the Championships.

The team is set to depart for Tokyo on March 13, ready to compete against the world’s best.

The Lanzarote Calero Sailing Team completed its participation in the 44Cup Nanny Cay on a strong note, with all races finished under ideal conditions, including 15-18 knot winds and clear skies. The team’s performance showcased marked progress as they competed in a high-level fleet, demonstrating their growing capabilities within the class.

Throughout the day, the team made strategic adjustments to adapt to the changing conditions. Starting with the J3 jib for the first few races, they switched to the J2 jib for later races, maintaining consistent performance. Particularly noteworthy were their starts and the first windward mark roundings, where the team matched up well against the top contenders in the field. Although Charisma and Aleph Racing battled it out for the title, newer teams like GeMera and Lanzarote Calero Sailing Team used the final race to refine their coordination and continue gaining experience.

Looking ahead, the Lanzarote Calero Sailing Team is now focused on the next stop of the 44Cup circuit in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, scheduled for May 15-18, 2025. With key learnings from Nanny Cay, the team is eager to make further strides, especially with the anticipation of racing with their own boat in Porto Cervo.

“We’ve completed a very demanding event, facing some of the world’s best crews. While the results don’t yet reflect our full potential, we leave with invaluable experience and the certainty that with our own boat at the next event, we will be able to compete under better conditions,” said tactician Alfredo González.

As the 44Cup continues to grow, the Lanzarote Calero Sailing Team remains committed to using the competition as a platform for talent development, combining experienced sailors with promising young prospects. With their new boat designed specifically to meet their needs, the team aims to close the gap and emerge as a stronger contender in future events, including the overall standings.

Jakob Noblett-Diaz and Delilah Pease, two of the Caribbean’s leading junior squash players, represented the region earlier this month at the British Junior Open (BJO), held from January 2-6 in Birmingham, England.

Widely regarded as the most prestigious junior squash tournament globally, the BJO attracts elite players and serves as the de facto world championship for most junior age categories.

Jakob competed in the Boys U13 category, while Delilah participated in the Girls U11 division. Both players entered the tournament as reigning Caribbean champions, having won their respective titles at the Caribbean Junior Championships hosted at Tortola Sports Club in July 2024. Their preparation also included competing at the Canadian Junior Open in December, where Delilah won her event, and Jakob secured a plate division victory.

At the BJO, Jakob faced stiff competition against players from Canada, Poland, China, and Japan. He managed one victory, defeating Japan’s Kaisei Arita in straight sets, and concluded his debut tournament in 57th place.

Delilah, making her second appearance at the BJO, improved on her previous 28th-place finish. She narrowly lost her opening match against England’s top-ranked player but rebounded to win three of her next four matches, finishing 19th overall.

National Squash Coach Adam Murrills accompanied the players and praised their performances, noting the importance of exposure to such a high level of competition.
“The British Junior Open provided an invaluable learning experience for Jakob and Delilah,” Murrills stated. “Competing against the world’s best players not only highlights areas for improvement but also fosters growth and resilience. Both players adapted well to the challenges they faced and demonstrated improvement throughout the tournament. I am proud of their efforts and look forward to their continued development.”

Match Results:

Delilah Pease (Girls U11)

  • Lost to Ada Brown (England) 11-9, 11-2, 12-10
  • Defeated Elsie Griffiths (Wales) 11-7, 11-6, 2-11, 11-8

Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo won gold in the men’s 200 meters final on Thursday, August 8, finishing with a time of 19.46 seconds, the fourth-fastest in Olympic history.

Tebogo’s victory overshadowed the struggles of American star Noah Lyles, who crossed the line in third after revealing he was battling COVID-19. Following the race, Lyles was assisted off the track in a wheelchair.

Lyles’ finish for the second consecutive Olympics left fans and competitors in shock. Despite his health struggles, Lyles managed to finish in 19.70 seconds, falling to his back in pain as he grappled with the effects of the virus that had impacted him throughout his Olympic journey.

As Lyles dealt with his medical issues, Kenny Bednarek secured silver with a time of 19.62 seconds.

Lyles’ condition became evident a night earlier when he finished second in a semifinal and headed to the medical tent without speaking to the press. Despite reassurances from his coach that he was fine, it was clear something was wrong as the final unfolded.

As the runners approached the homestretch, Lyles fell behind, unable to summon his finishing kick. What was once a reliable surge in the final stretch transformed into a push for the line, culminating in a collapse onto the purple track, marking a conclusion to his Olympic journey.

Thad Lettsome is set to represent the British Virgin Islands at the 2024 Paris Olympics. This achievement marks the culmination of years of dedication and hard work. When asked about his feelings, Thad shared, “It feels amazing to have achieved my goal. It’s incredibly satisfying as it demonstrates that hard work pays off.”

Thad first heard the news from his mother during a FaceTime call. “She FaceTimed me one day, which I thought was quite strange, and without any warning, shared the news with me. I then shared it with my brother, other immediate family, and my coaches,” he recounted, still buzzing with excitement.

With his Olympics debut on the horizon, Thad’s primary goal is to “leave it on the water and do everything I can to put the BVI flag ahead of as many others as possible.” He aims to ensure good starts in each race and to sail strategically smart upwinds. “I have been working hard at these aspects of the races with my coaches and training partners,” he added, his determination evident.

As he gears up for his races, Thad anticipates that the most challenging aspect will be the ability of all sailors to “come back” from bad positions due to their speed and experience. He plans to manage this by breaking the fleet down into smaller groups and focusing on staying ahead of the boats around him. His strategic approach showcases his tactical acumen and readiness for the high-stakes competition.

To prepare for the Laser class, Thad has focused intensely on fitness and proper preparation and recovery. He emphasises the physical nature of the Laser class, stating that it is “notoriously physical.” His rigorous training regimen reflects his commitment to peak performance.

Thad credits his coaches, including Brenda Bowskill, for being instrumental in his development and preparation. “Brenda supplements my training with technical advice, while my main coach, Chris Watters, provides overall structure, guidance, and support,” he said. The support from his coaches has been invaluable in refining his skills and boosting his confidence.

Balancing training with academics has been challenging, but Thad has received support from coaches, parents, and school staff. He graduated from Tabor Academy in 2020 and Tulane University in 2024. “It is certainly difficult to do both, but I’m assisted by coaches, my parents, staff at school, and others,” he explained, highlighting the teamwork that has been crucial to his success.

He plans to apply all the skill and knowledge he has acquired over the past 13 years and do his very best at the Olympics. “It is easy to stay focused when one is so eager to apply what they have learned and demonstrate their skill,” he noted, his excitement palpable.

The sailor is particularly looking forward to being among many people who have excelled in their fields and is excited about the opening ceremony. “Outside of competition, I’m certainly looking forward to the opening ceremony,” he shared, his enthusiasm infectious.

Managing the mental and physical pressures of the Olympics, Thad believes that staying focused on his goal of competing hard and applying what he has learned will help him manage the pressures. “Staying focused on my goal will prevent me from succumbing to pressure,” he said with determination.

Having raced against a majority of the fleet at various regattas, Thad plans to emphasise the importance of a good start in each race. “It will be crucial to try to get ahead from early as there will likely be fewer opportunities to pass competitors in such a small fleet,” he explained, showcasing his tactical insight.

Thad is currently focused on the task at hand but acknowledges that the Olympic experience will better him as a sailor regardless of what he chooses to do next. “The Olympics are an invaluable experience that will certainly better me as a sailor,” he said, looking forward to future challenges.

He sees great potential for sailing in the BVI and hopes his qualification will inspire youths and parents to embrace the nautical side of their culture. “I hope that my qualification for the games can serve as an inspiration to youths and parents alike,” he stated, his passion for sailing evident.

Qualifying for the Olympics has reinforced Thad’s belief that anything is possible through hard work and dedication. His family has been his main supporters throughout his journey. “My family and friends were ecstatic and proud upon hearing the news,” he shared, grateful for their unwavering support.

Thad encourages young athletes to find someone to train with and push them. “Never turn down an opportunity as you don’t know where it will lead,” he advised. He also emphasises the importance of envisioning oneself achieving their goals. “As long as you can see yourself achieving your goals, it doesn’t matter what others think,” he concluded, inspiring the next generation of athletes.

As the BVI National Record Holder in the 60m and 100m, a 2X Semifinalist qualifier at the World Indoor Championships, and a recipient of numerous other prestigious titles, Brathwaite’s journey in the world of sprinting is far from over.
