BVI Delegation Engages CARICOM Ambassadors in Taiwan to Strengthen Regional Ties
The British Virgin Islands Hong Kong Representative Office, led by Associate Director Siobhan M. Flax and accompanied by Political Economy Officers Ronn A. Grant and Kyla K. Forbes, met with Caribbean Community ambassadors in the Republic of China (Taiwan) on April 1 to present updates on education, regional integration and financial services.
The delegation addressed a meeting of CARICOM ambassadors, where Ms. Flax delivered remarks on behalf of Natalio D. Wheatley and the Government of the Virgin Islands, outlining developments in the BVI Asia Abroad Scholarship Programme, the territory’s pursuit of full CARICOM and Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States membership, and updates within the financial services sector.
The delegation was received by Robert K. Lewis, Ambassador of Saint Lucia and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Taiwan. Other attendees included Katherine Meighan, Donya Francis, Kenton Chance and a minister counsellor from the Embassy of Haiti.
The meeting was followed by discussions with ambassadors and staff, which officials said provided an opportunity to expand engagement between the Virgin Islands and Caribbean representatives in the Asia-Pacific region.
Ms. Flax said the territory remains committed to collaboration within the Caribbean community abroad. “Together, we can amplify our presence, strengthen our connections and create meaningful opportunities for our people across the region,” she said.
As part of the visit, the delegation also conducted outreach to academic institutions, including Taipei Medical University, the University of Taiwan and National Sun Yat-sen University, in connection with the BVI Asia Abroad Scholarship Programme.

Spirit Airlines Shutdown Drives Up Travel Costs for Virgin Islands Travelers
The abrupt shutdown of Spirit Airlines on May 2 has led to sharp increases in airfares for travelers in the Virgin Islands, where many residents rely on flights out of St. Thomas for affordable travel to the United States.
Spirit Airlines ceased operations “effective immediately” after failing to secure a $500 million bailout, canceling all flights and leaving passengers stranded across the United States and Caribbean.
The impact has been immediate in the Virgin Islands, particularly for travelers returning from Carnival activities, who have reported significantly higher costs to leave St. Thomas. Some passengers said they were forced to pay as much as “$900 for one-way tickets” after scrambling to rebook flights on other airlines.
Others described the situation as chaotic, with flights canceled with little notice. One traveler said her flight was canceled “only eight hours prior” to departure, forcing last-minute arrangements at elevated prices.
For residents of the British Virgin Islands, the disruption is compounded by long-standing travel patterns. Many BVI residents routinely travel by ferry to St. Thomas to access lower-cost flights, particularly on Spirit Airlines, which historically offered some of the cheapest routes to destinations such as Fort Lauderdale.
With the airline’s exit, those options have disappeared, and competing carriers have struggled to meet demand. While some airlines introduced reduced or capped “rescue fares,” availability has been limited, and prices remain significantly higher than Spirit’s typical rates.
Industry analysts say the loss of Spirit, known for its ultra-low fares, is expected to drive up ticket prices. “Any time you have a reduction in capacity and demand increases, airfares have nowhere to go but up,” said CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg.
Across the region, travelers have also turned to social media to express frustration, with some reporting they had to seek financial help to afford replacement flights after cancellations.
Spirit’s closure follows years of financial instability, rising fuel costs and failed merger attempts, culminating in the airline grounding its fleet after 34 years of operations.
For the Virgin Islands, the loss of a major low-cost carrier is expected to have longer-term implications, particularly for budget-conscious travelers and those who depend on St. Thomas as a gateway to international travel.

North Shores and South Breeze Open With Wins in BVI Under-14 Youth League
North Shores and South Breeze opened the British Virgin Islands Football Association’s Under-14 Youth League with victories on Saturday, May 2, as the competition began with four teams — South Breeze, North Shores, West Tides and East Winds — competing in a six-week schedule.
North Shores defeated East Winds 4–2, while South Breeze secured a 3–2 win over West Tides, according to official results released by the association.
Devon Mellor scored twice for North Shores, with additional goals from Julian Johnson and Saxton Stoutt. East Winds’ goals came from George Hollingworth and Kenry Nevers. In the other match, Jezaan Demming scored twice for South Breeze and Tommy Bovio added one, while Finley Hollingworth and Okeil McKennon scored for West Tides.
Following the opening round, North Shores leads the standings on goal difference, level on three points with South Breeze. West Tides and East Winds are yet to record points.
The league will run over six weeks, with matches scheduled weekly through early June. Teams will compete in a round-robin format under an 8-versus-8 structure, earning points as standings develop over the course of the season.
The association said the initiative is part of its broader effort to strengthen youth football by providing consistent match play and competitive exposure at the grassroots level. The Under-14 league also forms part of a wider development pathway aimed at building skills and experience among young players while supporting the long-term growth of the sport in the British Virgin Islands.
