The British Virgin Islands (BVI) Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) has received a vital donation from the BVI Cancer Society aimed at improving cancer care in the territory. This generous contribution, made in memory of Kirima Shameka Forbes, includes a specialised contrast injector for MRI imaging, an advanced tool that will enhance diagnostic capabilities for various types of cancer.
Discussions about the donation began over a year ago, led by Ms. Fahie of the BVI Cancer Society, whose commitment remained strong throughout the process. After evaluating several vendors, Bayer was selected to supply the equipment. Bayer not only absorbed additional costs from price changes but also facilitated the installation of an engraved plate on the machine to commemorate the donation in honor of Ms. Forbes.
The contrast injector arrived in April 2024 and was installed the following month. MRI technologist Lemeal Clyne completed training on the equipment in September 2024, with further in-person training planned by Bayer to ensure the system’s full functionality.
This cutting-edge equipment will play a crucial role in improving cancer imaging, particularly for breast and prostate MRI scans, as well as head, neck, and vascular studies. The device will reduce scan times, increase image accuracy, and improve patient safety by lowering the risk of adverse reactions. It also integrates with the hospital’s electronic medical records, streamlining patient care.
The BVIHSA expressed deep gratitude to the Cancer Society and the Forbes family for this meaningful collaboration, acknowledging the significance of the donation. “We empathise with the Forbes family’s loss but are grateful for their contribution to ensuring Kirima Shameka Forbes is remembered in a special way,” a BVIHSA representative stated. This equipment will not only enhance cancer care but also leave a lasting legacy in the name of Ms. Forbes.
