Attorney-at-Law Corine George-Massicote and Stacy ‘Buddha’ Mather were today elected Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly, respectively.

The two were elected during the May 18 First Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly in Road Town, Tortola

The motion for George-Massicote to return as House Speaker was moved by Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley and seconded by Opposition Leader Ronnie Skelton.

George-Massicote, who served one year in the previous administration, was the only candidate put forward during this morning’s sitting.

Premier Wheatley’s proposal for Fourth Electoral District Representative and Junior Culture and Tourism Minister Luce Hodge-Smith be appointed Deputy Speaker was opposed by the Opposition Leader Skelton on the grounds that a serving minister cannot be elected as Speaker or Deputy Speaker.

His nomination was later withdrawn and Skelton proposed Mather, a member of the opposition and community activist.

Mather was elected Deputy Speaker after his nomination was seconded by Second Electoral District Representative Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull.
