The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) have confirmed that Owen Safford of North Carolina, United States, is the tourist who died in last Thursday’s boating accident near Great Harbour in the vicinity of Foxy’s Bar on Jost Van Dyke.

The 33-year-old lost his life on March 22 when the dingy he was captaining crashed into a large tamarind tree that had fallen into the water during Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.

The accident occurred shortly before midnight and Stafford was found unresponsive in the water. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

Angry residents have made several unsuccessful appeals to the relevant authorities to remove the fallen tree for the safety of boaters.

The investigation into the fatal accident is ongoing, the RVIPF stated.
