A tourist died yesterday when the dingy he was captaining collided with a fallen tree at Great Harbour in the vicinity of Foxy’s Bar on Jost Van Dyke.

On March 22, the dead man crashed into a large tamarind tree that had fallen into the water during Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police (RVIP) confirmed that the accident occurred shortly before midnight and that the tourist was found unresponsive in the water.

“The one male occupant, a visitor to the Territory, was found unresponsive in the waters with injuries to the head while the dinghy he was in was met circling in the area. Following attempts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead,” the police press statement stated.

Angry residents said they have made several unsuccessful appeals to the relevant authorities to remove the fallen tree for the safety of boaters.
