The Virgin Islands government is taking decisive steps toward the establishment of a National Tourism Policy, following the recently concluded inaugural Tourism Summit held at Peter Island on January 16 and 17. This policy aims to guide the Territory’s tourism development for years to come.

Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Dr. Natalio Wheatley, emphasized the crucial role tourism plays in the Territory’s economy during his keynote address. “Tourism remains a vital pillar of our economy, providing employment, stimulating business development, and enhancing the standard of living for all,” Premier Wheatley stated. “As we strive to sustain this industry, we must do so with a shared vision and collective responsibility.”

The summit, which brought together over 330 stakeholders, tourism experts, and industry leaders, initiated discussions on key strategies to strengthen the tourism sector. A major outcome was the announcement of extensive public consultations, ensuring the final policy reflects the voices and needs of all stakeholders. The finalized National Tourism Policy and Plan is expected by June 2025.

The summit outlined several critical initiatives to advance tourism:

  • Sustainable Practices: Investments will be made to protect the Territory’s environment, a cornerstone of its appeal as a destination.
  • Empowering Local Communities: The introduction of the Tourism Investment Programme for Micro Enterprises (TIP ME) aims to provide opportunities for small businesses to thrive within the industry.
  • Enhanced Visitor Experience: Plans include upgrading infrastructure, integrating modern technology, and offering targeted training programs to elevate service standards.

Junior Minister of Tourism, Honourable Luce Hodge-Smith, highlighted the collaborative nature of the Territory’s achievements, urging residents to view themselves as active participants in the tourism ecosystem. “Tourism is everyone’s business,” she said. “Every resident, whether directly or indirectly involved in the industry, is an ambassador for our Territory. Each interaction, from the taxi driver to the hotel concierge, contributes to the overall perception of the Virgin Islands as a premier destination.”

One of the summit’s highlights was the celebration of Peter Island Resort’s recovery and reopening after the devastating impact of hurricanes Irma and Maria. The resort’s revitalization stands as a symbol of resilience and determination within the Virgin Islands tourism industry.

Permanent Secretary for Tourism, Culture, and Sustainable Development, Mr. Joseph Smith, reflected on the significance of the summit: “This summit marks the beginning of a significant journey—a journey to shape the future of tourism in the Virgin Islands. Through your participation, feedback, and insights, we will be guided in formulating a comprehensive National Tourism Policy.”

The summit underscored the importance of sustainability, cultural integration, and economic empowerment as key drivers for a robust tourism industry. The Ministry of Tourism pledged to foster a sustainable and inclusive sector, ensuring the benefits of tourism are equitably distributed among all residents.

The Virgin Islands’ renewed focus on responsible tourism, cultural preservation, and innovative solutions is expected to create a resilient and prosperous tourism sector, positioning the Territory as a global leader in sustainable tourism.

As the world celebrates the social, cultural, and economic significance of tourism, the British Virgin Islands is joining the global community in marking World Tourism Day today, September 27. This annual event, established by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) in 1980, serves as a reminder of tourism’s critical role in fostering international cooperation, cultural exchange, and sustainable development.

This year’s celebration takes on added importance for the British Virgin Islands, where tourism forms the backbone of the local economy. The islands, renowned for their pristine beaches, sailing culture, and rich heritage, stand as a prime example of how tourism can uplift communities by creating jobs, preserving cultural traditions, and promoting environmental stewardship.

World Tourism Day emphasises not just the economic contributions of tourism but also the importance of responsible and sustainable travel. This message resonates strongly with the British Virgin Islands, where officials are increasingly focusing on balancing tourism growth with the need to protect the islands’ natural beauty and cultural integrity.

A Call for Sustainable Travel

Sustainability is at the heart of this year’s World Tourism Day message. The British Virgin Islands, like many other destinations, face the challenge of preserving their fragile ecosystems while welcoming millions of visitors each year. With an increasing emphasis on ecotourism, the BVI government and local businesses are encouraging visitors to minimise their environmental impact by supporting green initiatives, using eco-friendly products, and respecting local customs.

Global Participation, Local Impact

As part of the global celebrations, travellers around the world are invited to share their experiences on social media, showcasing the diversity and cultural richness that tourism brings to each destination. In the BVI, local residents are encouraged to participate by visiting lesser-known historical sites, supporting local businesses, and engaging with the culture that defines the islands.

World Tourism Day is more than just an annual event—it’s a call to action for governments, businesses, and travellers to ensure that tourism is a force for good, one that benefits both visitors and the communities they explore. For the British Virgin Islands, this celebration offers a moment to highlight the islands’ contributions to global tourism and to reaffirm their commitment to preserving the very assets that make them a world-class destination.

Quito’s Gazebo and Luxury Inn, is transitioning to new ownership after 43 remarkable years. The venue, renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and pivotal role in the local music scene, is embarking on a new chapter.

The announcement, made through a heartfelt post on their Facebook page, expressed gratitude for the support and memories shared over the decades. “All good things come to an end,” the post read. “It is time to move on and enjoy this new phase… retirement!” The message also hinted at future endeavors, with plans for more travel, reading, and enjoying life’s new interests.

On December 12, 2023, Mark Vanterpool, a retired BVI legislator and respected entrepreneur, announced during the grand reopening ceremony of the Rock Cafe Pussers in Virgin Gorda that the Vanterpool Family Group is set to acquire Quito’s Hotel & Restaurant. “The Vanterpool Family Group is buying Quito’s,” Vanterpool confirmed, putting to rest any speculation. He humorously added, “We are signing the agreement tomorrow, and over the next several months, we will be finalizing it if my bank finds the money. My bank, I’m putting you on the spot here.”

Vanterpool expressed his admiration for the property, saying, “We are buying Quito’s because I love Quito. I love the hotel that he has developed; it’s at a very high standard. I love the restaurant on the water.” As part of the acquisition, the Vanterpool Family Group plans to sell the Quito’s units, with each room set to be sold and leased back. “So write your checks now; it starts at a million,” Vanterpool said.

The closure of Quito’s Gazebo and Luxury Inn coincides with Quito’s retirement from music. His final concert on July 14, was a celebration of a career that has left an indelible mark on reggae music. Cane Garden Bay Beach was alive with reggae enthusiasts celebrating Quito’s legacy with a moving performance by Quito & The Edge.

The closure of Quito’s marks the end of a significant chapter in Cane Garden Bay’s history. The legacy of the venue and Quito’s music will continue to resonate with fans and the community.

Minister of Communications and Works, Honourable Kye Rymer, has called on Inter Caribbean Airways to expedite efforts to address ongoing service issues that have frustrated travellers from the Virgin Islands. This follows a surge of public complaints about frequent delays, cancellations, and other disruptions.

In response to these concerns, Honourable Rymer held urgent discussions with the airline’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Trevor Sadler, and Chief Operations Officer, Mr. Craig Chapple. The talks focused on the need for immediate improvements to the airline’s service levels.

Airline officials attributed the recent disruptions to a combination of technical difficulties with their aircraft and ongoing staffing challenges. However, Honourable Rymer stressed the critical importance of reliable air transport for the Territory, particularly in maintaining vital regional connections and supporting the local economy.

“Dependable and efficient air transport services are essential for the well-being of our residents and visitors,” said Minister Rymer. “The Government of the Virgin Islands is committed to ensuring that these standards are met. We have urged Inter Caribbean Airways to accelerate their efforts to resolve these issues and restore the level of service that our community expects and deserves.”

In response, Inter Caribbean Airways assured the Minister that they are actively working to resolve the technical and crew-related issues that have led to the service disruptions. The airline acknowledged the importance of providing consistent and reliable service to the BVI and committed to making the necessary improvements.

The Ministry of Communications and Works will continue to closely monitor the situation and keep the public informed of any further developments. Meanwhile, the Government remains dedicated to exploring all possible options to ensure that the air travel needs of the BVI community are met with the highest standards of service.
