In a move reminiscent of the 2017 travel bans, the Trump administration is contemplating new travel restrictions that could affect citizens from 41 countries, among them the Dominican Republic and St. Lucia. An internal memo obtained by Reuters outlines a proposal for varying levels of visa suspensions, pending approval from key officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The draft memo categorises the 41 countries into three groups based on the severity of the proposed restrictions:

  • Full Visa Suspension: Ten countries, including Afghanistan, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Venezuela, could face complete visa suspensions.

  • Partial Visa Suspension: Five nations, such as Eritrea, Haiti, and Myanmar, may experience restrictions on specific visa categories, including tourist and student visas.

  • Conditional Partial Suspension: Twenty-six countries, including the Dominican Republic and St. Lucia, might encounter partial suspensions if they fail to address certain deficiencies identified by U.S. authorities.

The inclusion of the Dominican Republic and St. Lucia in the conditional partial suspension category has raised concerns about potential impacts on tourism and bilateral relations. Both Caribbean nations are popular destinations for American travelers, and any travel restrictions could have significant economic repercussions.

Currently, U.S. citizens do not require a visa for stays shorter than 30 days in the Dominican Republic. Similarly, St. Lucia does not mandate visas for U.S. visitors, provided they have a valid passport and proof of onward travel.

The proposed travel restrictions are part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to enhance national security. The internal memo cites concerns over information-sharing practices, identity-management protocols, and security conditions in the listed countries. The administration aims to mitigate potential threats by imposing these visa restrictions.

It’s important to note that the proposal remains unapproved and is subject to change. The final decision will involve consultations among various government agencies and is expected to consider diplomatic relations, economic impacts, and national security interests.

As the situation develops, travelers and stakeholders are advised to stay informed about potential changes to U.S. travel policies affecting these countries.

The newly formed LIAT 2020 launched its inaugural flight to Saint Lucia today, August 6, signaling the resurgence of the inter-regional airline following the bankruptcy of its predecessor, LIAT (1974) Ltd, in January this year.

The inaugural flight departed from V.C. Bird International Airport in Antigua at 11:30 a.m., carrying a delegation of dignitaries and media representatives. The launch was preceded by a brief opening ceremony where Prime Minister Gaston A. Browne of Antigua and Barbuda, along with other officials, expressed their pride and optimism for the future of LIAT 2020.

Formed in partnership with Air Peace, a Nigerian private airline established in 2013, LIAT 2020 aims to restore and enhance regional connectivity. The new entity emerges from the shadow of LIAT 1974 Ltd, which had been under administration since July 24, 2020.

LIAT 2020 begins operations with a fleet of seven aircraft, initially offering a limited schedule of three flights per week between Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Lucia, and Barbados. This strategic launch is part of a broader vision to rebuild a reliable inter-island transport network that is vital for the economic and social fabric of the Caribbean.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Air Peace would invest nearly US$65 million into the venture, with the government of Antigua and Barbuda contributing an additional US$20 million.

While LIAT 2020 has yet to schedule flights to the British Virgin Islands (VI), there is growing anticipation that the airline will soon expand its routes to include this key destination. The VI, currently facing challenges with regional airline services, stands to benefit significantly from LIAT 2020’s enhanced connectivity.

Thea LaFond made history for her Caribbean island nation of Dominica by winning gold in the triple jump on Saturday, claiming the country’s first-ever Olympic medal. LaFond’s outstanding performance was highlighted by her second attempt of 15.02 meters, a world best for the year, which proved unbeatable despite the challenging rainy conditions at the Stade de France.

Jamaica’s Shanieka Ricketts took silver with a season-best jump of 14.87 meters, while American Jasmine Moore claimed bronze with a leap of 14.67 meters.

In an interview with Reuters ahead of the final, LaFond, 30, revealed that the entire nation was holding its breath, hoping she would secure a medal. Delivering on those hopes and more, LaFond celebrated exuberantly, draped in the Dominican flag, after her historic victory.

LaFond’s win marked a memorable night for the Caribbean, as Saint Lucia also celebrated its first-ever Olympic medal when Julien Alfred stormed to gold in the 100 meters, ahead of American Sha’Carri Richardson.

The triple jump competition was notably unpredictable due to the absence of Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas, the world record holder and Tokyo gold medalist, who missed the Games due to an Achilles tendon injury.

Ricketts, who narrowly missed the podium at the Tokyo Olympics, achieved her season’s best to secure the silver medal. Moore, 23, made history as the first woman to make the U.S. Olympic team in both triple jump and long jump, and she is set to compete in the latter event on Tuesday.

Spain’s Ana Peleteiro-Compaore, the bronze medallist in Tokyo, finished sixth with a jump of 14.59 meters, visibly upset with her performance. Cuba’s world number one Leyanis Perez Hernandez came fifth with a jump of 14.62 meters.
