The BVI Basketball Association and the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports announced the launch of the 2026 Winston Bolus National Basketball League, marking the return of organized national basketball competition in the Virgin Islands following a prolonged period of inactivity linked to governance issues within the BVI Basketball Federation.

The league, named in honor of longtime commentator Winston Bolus, is scheduled to reestablish structured play after no official national league was held since 2022.

Basketball activity in the territory declined after internal disputes within the BVI Basketball Federation, including unresolved election matters and governance concerns, led to the expiration of its executive body without new leadership being installed.

The breakdown prompted intervention from the BVI Olympic Committee and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), which supported efforts to restore governance and facilitate the organization of new elections.

During that period, stakeholders, including players and local organizers, raised concerns about the absence of competition and its impact on the sport’s development.

In response, a separate group established the BVI Amateur Basketball Association to organize local leagues and maintain basketball activity while efforts to address governance issues continued.

The current initiative, led by the BVI Basketball Association in collaboration with the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, is intended to reintroduce a structured national league and provide a pathway for athlete development.

Registration for the 2026 Winston Bolus National Basketball League has been extended to April 4, 2026, according to organizers.

The BVI Football Association on Sept. 15 awarded Concacaf regional club licenses to Panthers FC, Rebels FC, Islanders FC, Virgin Gorda United, and Wolues FC, while also issuing domestic club licenses to Positive FC, One Love United, Sugar Boys FC, Avengers FC, Old Madrid, and Lion Heart FC.

The licenses were granted as part of Concacaf’s club licensing program, which establishes minimum standards for club operations and eligibility to compete in regional competitions. The move comes ahead of the start of the 2025 National League, scheduled to begin on Sept. 27.

In addition to licensing, the BVIFA distributed training balls to support the clubs’ preparations for the new season. Association officials said the equipment is intended to strengthen readiness and maintain competitive standards as teams gear up for league play.

The National League is the BVIFA’s top domestic competition, and the newly licensed clubs are expected to participate when matches begin later this month.

Jaleel Croal has solidified his position among the world’s top 200-metre runners with a national record-setting time of 19.95 seconds, earning him a spot in the global rankings and qualification for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

Croal’s qualification places him in a fiercely competitive field that includes Olympic and world medalists such as Noah Lyles, Bryan Levell, Letsile Tebogo and Wayde van Niekerk — a testament to his rise onto the world stage.

Earlier this year at the Junior Pan American Games in Asunción, Paraguay, Croal earned silver in the 200m with a time of 20.39 seconds, also securing bronze in the 100m earlier in the meet. These performances capped a season in which he broke the BVI national record, signaling his readiness for elite-level competition.

Born in 2003 in Road Town, Croal competes collegiately at the University of South Florida and holds multiple sprint titles and records. His personal bests include 10.13 seconds in the 100m and 20.38 in the 200m, showcasing his rapid improvement across both distances.

The 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo run from Sept. 13–21, where Croal will match strides with the fastest men in the sport. His presence in the heats underscores the BVI’s emerging status on the global sprinting scene.
